Gary Poe: b. 1943, d. 2021
Gary Dean Poe (b. 1943, d. 2021), of Ashe County, NC, in retirement, was dedicated to the research and perpetuation of traditional mountain music including old time string music, bluegrass, and traditional shaped note singing. He hosted the Gary Poe show on WKSK which aired twice a week where he promoted many genres of Appalachian Music.
Most surprising to his singing friends: While teaching at Ashe Central High School, Gary—a quiet and understated man—coached an all-conference football team earning him the title of "General" from his winning team.
