Saturday, 21 September at Elkmont Chapel of Valley View Baptist Church

Originally erected in what became Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Elkmont Chapel was dismantled, loaded onto a truck, moved to its present site, and re-erected, in 1938. In 2017 the date of the singing was changed to the fourth Saturday in September, the day before the Headrick Chapel singing.

Today we had 2 to 4 trebles, 5 altos, 5 leads, and 2 basses. Leads in the pews faced altos, with basses to their left, trebles to their right. Jeremy Shipp and the three Shipp kids sat in the pew behind the leads.

Sunday, 22 September at Headrick Chapel

Annual New Harp of Columbia Headrick Chapel Singing, Sunday, September 22nd, 2024. Moderators were David Sarten in the morning, and Andrew Whaley in the afternoon. We had at least 27 singers, with 5 trebles, 7 altos, at least 11 leads, 4 basses. We sang 54 songs.

Headrick Chapel was built in 1902, out of sturdy yellow poplar (tulip poplar) boards. Four congregations shared it, each meeting monthly: Northern and Southern Baptists, Missionary Baptists, and Primitive Baptists. The building has not been a house of worship for more than two decades. The singing in this space probably dates from the 1960s. A sign in front proclaims that Headrick Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The singing was extraordinarily loud. I measured 87 decibels with an iPhone app. (OSHA action level is 85 db.)
