South Carolina Singing in Memory of William Walker
About this singing
This singing began in 1994, and has continued consistently since then. Harry Eskew was an important driver in its early days.
Note about the first go, from the Spring 1994 Old Harp Newsletter: “The William Walker Memorial Singing was held on January 8, 1994 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, singing works by him from the Southern Harmony and Sacred Harp. They plan to make this an annual affair. We hope both Christian Harmony books will be available by then to be included in the event.” [Both Carolina and Alabama books were due a reprint during 1994.]
This singing is famously(?) followed by a short walk to William Walker's grave in Spartanburg's historic Magnolia Cemetery, where a song or two, and perhaps a prayer are offered.
