Eva Adcock: b. 1925, d. 1993

Eva Jacqueline Blumberg Adcock (b. 1925, d. 1993) founded the Mountain Heritage Day singing.

A remembrance from Christian Harmony Notes, No. 3, April 27, 1993.

“Farewell to a Good Friend.

“Although I did not know Eva Adcock personally, I had, over the years, come to deeply respect this remarkable lady. I first saw Eva on a steamy hot day in late September several years ago, when I sat on the back row—a shy newcomer alto—surrounded by confident life-long singers at the Christian Harmony Singing at Mountain Heritage Day in Cullowhee, N. C. I sang with this wonderful gathering as Eva led her favorite song, "Angel Band." Later I learned that, through her love and respect for the musical traditions of our area, Eva had been instrumental in making shape-note singing a part of that festival.

“In March of this year, I had the honor of being a part of a group, gathered from as far away as Georgia, who came to sing "Angel Band" at Eva's memorial service. We were only a small part of the service, as shape-notes were only a portion of Eva's musical life. The service, which consisted mainly of music performed by her friends, students, and co-workers, spoke more eloquently of this woman's life than could any written or spoken words.

“Dr. Eva Adcock, Professor Emeritus of Music at Western Carolina University and shape-note singer, died on March 7, 1993, and we will miss her.”
