Maryville College Singing at 1400h on Sunday, October 27th, 2019 in the old Lamar Memorial Library building, now the Samuel Tyndale Wilson Center for Campus Ministry. Tom Taylor was the convener. We had 25 singers, about the number we've had the last few years.

Isaac Anderson, the first president of Maryville College, founded this group before the Civil War. For many years it was the last singing of the year, so the singing included Christmas carols. After the relocation of Maryville College to its present site in 1871, the singing was held at Wilson Chapel there.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of Maryville College in 1819.

As is usual at this singing, basses (7 of them) in the (liturgical) East faced altos (6), leads (7) in the South faced trebles (5).

I'm a great fan of Isaac Watts (1674–1748), who wrote the words to close to half of our songs. Any song that mentions worms (like today's 94 Devizes, with its notorious poor polluted woo-oo-oo-oo-worm) - or flies or ants - is certain to be by Isaac Watts. In 1715 he published a book of texts for children. “I sing the (al)mighty power of God” - Episcopal hymnal 398, it's in most hymnals - I just discovered it today when it we sang it in my church. Third verse:

“There's not a plant nor flower below
But makes Thy glories known;
And clouds arise and tempests blow
By order from Thy throne.”
