Headrick Chapel Singing

Headrick Chapel
Wears Valley, Sevier County, Tennessee

Sunday, September 24, 2006

All selections from New Harp of Columbia, Restored Edition, 2001.

The annual Headricks Chapel singing, in Wears Valley southeast of Knoxville, Tennessee, was held in Sunday, September 24th, 2006. This is the biggest singing of the year for Old Harp singers in east Tennessee, singing from the seven-note New Harp of Columbia (the 2001 "Restored Edition", a photographic copy of the 1867 New Harp of Columbia, with about 40 songs restored from the 1848 Harp of Columbia. The "A" designation - such as A162 David's Lamentation - refers to songs restored in the 2001 Restored Edition.)

This year Headricks Chapel, built in 1902, has seen extensive renovation, with a new metal roof, interior painting, and cleaning and polyurethaning of old wooden pews and floorboards, with resulting brightening of the sound.

We welcomed a number of singers from the Sacred Harp and Christian Harmony traditions. Lois Headrick Luebke opened the singing, and Bruce Wheeler was the moderator.

Minutes of the morning session are incomplete. I welcome corrections and additions.
