The 7th Annual Wears Valley Convention
(Sat.) Elkmont Chapel, Valley View Baptist Church
(Sun.) Headrick Chapel
Wears Valley, Sevier County, Tennessee
Saturday, September 23, 2023 and Sunday, September 24, 2023
All selections from New Harp of Columbia, Restored Edition, 2001.
Saturday, 23 September at Elkmont Chapel of Valley View Baptist Church
Originally erected in what became Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Elkmont Chapel was dismantled, loaded onto a truck, moved to its present site, and re-erected, in 1938. In 2017 the date of the singing was changed to the fourth Saturday in September, the day before the Headrick Chapel singing.
Today we had 4 trebles, 5 altos, 10 leads, and 5 basses. Leads in the pews faced altos, with basses to their left, trebles to their right.

Sunday, 24 September at Headrick Chapel
Annual New Harp of Columbia Headrick Chapel Singing, Sunday, September 24th, 2023. Moderators were David Sarten in the morning, and Andrew Whaley in the afternoon. We had at least 34 singers, with 5 trebles, 9 altos, more than 12 leads, 7 basses. We sang 69 songs.
We had a number of visiting leaders from afar, and I was unable to obtain all of their names, so that there are many blanks in the minutes.
Headrick Chapel was built in 1902, out of sturdy yellow poplar (tulip poplar) boards, trees that abound in these regions. Four congregations shared it, each meeting monthly: Northern and Southern Baptists, Missionary Baptists, and Primitive Baptists. The building has not been a house of worship for more than two decades. The singing probably dates from the 1960s. A sign in front proclaims that Headrick Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
