Saturday, 24 September at Elkmont Chapel of Valley View Baptist Church

Andrew Whaley, the moderator, noted that this year marks the hundredth consecutive (except for 2020) singing (though not always at this location). Originally erected in what became Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Elkmont Chapel was dismantled, loaded onto a truck, moved to its present site, and re-erected, in 1938. In 2017 the date of the singing was changed to the fourth Saturday in September, the day before the Headrick Chapel singing. Today we had 4 trebles, 7 altos, 11 leads, and 4 basses, only a few less than we had in 2018. We sang 62 songs.

Sunday, 25 September at Headrick Chapel

Moderators were David Sarten in the morning, and Andrew Whaley in the afternoon. We had 34 singers, with 6 trebles, 7 altos, 13 leads, 6 basses (morning). We sang 67 songs.

Headrick Chapel was built in 1902, out of sturdy yellow poplar (tulip poplar) boards, trees that abound in these regions. Four congregations shared it, each meeting monthly: Northern and Southern Baptists, Missionary Baptists, and Primitive Baptists. The building has not been a house of worship for more than two decades. The singing probably dates from the 1960s. A sign in front proclaims that Headrick Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
